Dayara Bugyal – Surya Top trek

Overview

Situated at an elevation of about 10,000 feet above sea-level, this vast meadow is second to none in natural beauty. The panoramic view of the Himalayas from here is breath taking. Traditionally this trek has been continuously used by the Gujjars, the nomadic herdsmen who get their buffalos to the high meadows every summer and occasionally by the pilgrims / sadhus walking between Gangotri and Yamunotri.

Day 01: Delhi / Uttarkashi ( Train Journey + Drive 170 kms)

Morning board train to Haridwar. Met on arrival at the railway station to be driven to Uttarkashi.  Stop enroute at Chamba for lunch. Arrive Uttarkashi by early afternoon. On arrival, welcome tea/coffee and allotment of the tents at Shikhar Nature Resort, followed by lunch. Evening at Leisure, either participate in adventure activities at the camp or take a short hike to the nearby mountain. Campfire followed by dinner & Overnight stay at the resort.

Day 02: Uttarkashi – Barsu – Barnala ( Drive 35 kms + Trek 3-4 hrs)

After breakfast we head towards Barsu, the starting point of the trek. Bharnala Tal, 4 km away from Barsu, through dense pristine forests of Oak and Rhododendron. This is from where the famed meadows of Dayara start. The undulating expanse of the meadows stretching as far as the eye can see and the reflection of the high mountain peaks in the lake is a visual treat. Overnight stay in Alpine tents.

Day 03: Barnala – Dayara Bugyal (Trek 3 hrs)

A well laid-out trail through the pine forest will lead us to the high alpine meadows of Dayara, at a distance of approximately 5km from Bharnala. As one climbs on top of a mound, this vast meadow (mostly covered in snow) gradually unfolds itself; the view compels most trekkers to regard nature’s wonders with nothing but awe and amazement. The Bandarpoonch and Black Peak can be clearly seen from here.

For many years, the nomadic gujjar and bakarwal tribes have been taking their flock to graze at these delightful meadows in the summer months. The locals consider the area sacred and believe that the bugyals are home to angels.

Day 04: Dayara Bugyal – Syari Bugyal (Trek: 05 hrs)

After breakfast, we start trek to Syanri Meadows. This walk offer 360 degree view of Himalayan peaks including Bandarpunch (6350 mtrs), Dropdikadanda (6420 mtrs), Jaonli (6600 mtrs), Srikanth, Gangotri I,II,III and many other peaks.
It is best day of our walk on entire trek.

Day 05: Sayari Bugyal– Surya Top – Barsu Gera (Trek: 04 – 05 hrs)

After early breakfast we will set off for Surya Top (4100m) for more Himalayan views. Surya top is known for its grand views of Banderpunch massif and more peaks towards Himachal. We can also see Gangotri range to its best on east side.  Walk back on the ridge and divert to our camping at Barsu Gera.

Day 06: Barsu Gera – Barsu (Trek: 03 – 04 hrs)

It’s a down hill walk till barsu where will stay in tented accommodation for the night.
Evening free to explore the neighboring village.

Day 07: Barsu – Haridwar (Drive 220 kms)

Today we will drive back to Haridwar and on arrival check into a Heritage hotel along the Ganges.  If time permits, walk to the ghats of Ganges to experience the grandest of prayer ceremony that takes place every day at Haridwar, where thousands of devotees come every day to take a plunge in the Ganges.

Day 08: Haridwar – Delhi (Drive: 200 kms)

Drive Morning after breakfast drive back to Delhi.

Trip Notes

Our effort is to give a clear idea about various aspects of the trip to avoid any misunderstanding during the tour. We request you to please read all the information given herewith carefully.

On the Trek

Equipment

All camping equipment like carry mats, tents, will be provided by Freedom 2 Be. You’ll have to carry your own sleeping bags. In case somebody wants to hire sleeping bags, it can be arranged from NIM.
Besides camping tents there will be a separate kitchen and dining tent with camping stools.
Dry pit toilet tents would be put up at the camping sites.

Luggage & Porters

Travel Light ! A Rucksack is what we suggest.  But even duffle bag will do….
But NO fancy trolley suitcases please!
Porters / Mules will carry all personal luggage up to a maximum of 10 kgs. Members will carry only a small Day sack for keeping water, packed lunch, camera, extra layer of clothing etc. while trekking. Please ensure that your sack has sturdy straps.

If the member wishes to hire a porter so that he can walk along with the guest and carry their Day sacks, then an extra porter can be arranged on the spot for which the guest must make the payment directly.

Food

A typical menu on the trek will be as follows,
Breakfast: Bread toast with jam,butter, marmalade, nutela, eggs (though its not permitted on this route, but we’ll try to carry them), porridge, cornflakes, juice.
Lunch: Mostly pack lunch. sandwich / puri-bhaji, Boiled egg / potatos, Fruity, one fruit, chocolate.
Evening tea & biscuits/ pakoras
Dinner: Soup, vegetables (as per season), dal, chapatti, rice, papad / pickle, sweet dish. Chinese and continental will also be served during the trek.

WHEN TO GO ?

May – June: These are the best months for this trek , after the snow melts . During this period you will get to see glaciers on the ways and at couple of places you’ll have to cross them also. Sep – Oct: Another good two months after the monsoon to do this trek. You will experience lot of greenery around along with some lovely flowers till the tree line.
July – Aug: These months should be avoided due to the heavy monsoon influence in this area.

FITNESS

Most people in reasonably good health should not have any problems with most of the activities through the tour.  But good conditioning will allow you to enjoy the walks at high altitude without being totally fatigued.  We will be trekking for around 4-5 hours a day (on an average), where you’ll just be carrying your small day pack having necessary things.
Past experience in trekking:      Useful but not essential !

AVERAGE TEMPERATURE

While on the trek the temperatures expected during the day are as high as 15º to 20º Celsius and average night temperatures expected are 4º to 6º Celsius. Except during bad weather when the temperature can go as low as sub – zero.

MEDICAL & FIRST AID

This trek is physically challenging & in remote region, where professional medical help may not be available. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are in good health and physically & mentally fit to join the trip. The tour leaders, though not qualified medically, are all competent to give first-aid if and when required. In case you have an existing medical condition or disability you must inform us before making a booking with us.
There will be basic Government hospitals available at Haridwar, Uttarkashi & Harsil.

DELAY & UNEXPECTED HINDRANCE

Delays are expected on account of roadblock & weather conditions. Our effort will be to continue with the trip as per the schedule & make you as comfortable as possible. But in such situations we may have to compromise on the campsite / hotels & adjust to these situations then & there.

Kids

Children above the age of 12 with a sense of adventure are accepted on this hike. This trip encourage children to understand the interconnectedness between humans and nature.
Children sharing their parents’ room receive a discounted price. There are no babysitting facilities along the route, but extra bedding and special dishes can be arranged with advance notice.
