Trekking Level: Moderate – StrenuousInvolves walking on well-defined trails with small sections of moraine, or land slide areas, with daily average walking duration of 5-6 hrs for about 10 days . You are likely to cover between 8 and 12 kilometres each day with tough ascents and descents. Altitudes will often exceed 3500 metres with some days spent trekking above 4500 metres. Maximum altitude not exceeding 5000 m.

Roopkund (Skeleton Lake) is a glacial lake in Uttarakhand state of India famous due to more than five hundred human skeletons found at the edge of a lake. This lake is also called Mystery Lake. The location is uninhabited and is located in Himalaya at an altitude of about 5,029 mt (16,499 feet). A small glacial lake in the lap of Jurighati Dhar is the culmination point of annual Nanda Raj Jat. During the festival people from the villages bring their presiding deity to Roop Kund.  The trek of Roopkund passes through lush green grassy land and conifer forest clinging into the slope of hills. Bedni bugyal and Baguabasa are the most beautiful places in this trek

Highlights & Itinerary


Drive to Hardiwar the foothills of Himalayas . On arrival check into a Heritage hotel for overnight stay. In the evening visit the ghats for one of the grandest prayer ceremonies that takes place along the Ganges.

Early morning drive to the small hamlet of Lohajung (2213 m), from where you board local jeep to Wan, from where the trek begins.  On the way we cross Devprayag site, where the Alaknanada meets the Bhagirathi to move ahead as Ganges.

DAY 02: WAN / BEDNI BUGYAL TREK: 10 KM / 6 HRS, ATL : 3454 M

Begin the uphill trek and reach the ‘Bugyals’ (high altitude meadows) of Bedini (3354m) – a beautiful location with magnificent view of the surrounding mountains. There is a small lake situated in the midst of the meadow, where Tarpans are offered by the devotees. Situated nearby is a small temple where the devotees pay  there obeisance, during their halt at Bedni Bugyal.  Bedni Bugyal is the largest meadow of its kind in Uttarakhand. Excellent reflection photos of Mt Trishul can be captured from Bedni.

We will stay at the bugyals for one more night to get acclimatized and to enjoy the surrounding Himalayas.

DAY 04: BEDNI BUGYAL / BAGUABASA TREK: 8 KM /  5-6 hrs, ATL : 4100 M

After 2 hours of gradual climb up, uninterrupted views of Trisul range and Nanda Ghunti can be

appreciated. The trail crosses a hump to reach Bistola and then climbs up to Baguabasa, an improvised stone shelter that is generally used by local pilgrims.

DAY 05: BAGUABASA / ROOPKUND / BAGUABASA TREK: 5+5 KM/ 3+3 hrs, ALT : 5029 m

Trek to the mysterious lake – Roop Kund (5029m) which lies close to the base of the Trishul (7120m) and

Nanda Ghungti (6310m) Peaks. Roopkund the mystery lake is 5 kms from Bhagubasa, at Roopkund a large number of Human skeletons are found and anthropologists are still working on its signifcance. The lake however is nestled amidst panoramic mountain scenery. We hike another 30 minutes or so up to the ridge above the lake to explore the area and return back to Bhagu Basa for an overnight camp.

DAY 06: BAGUABASA / ALI BUGYAL TREK: 5 KM/ 4-5 hrs, ALT: 3275 m

Descend down to Ali Bugyal, which is another beautiful meadow close to Bedni Bugyal.

We trek in the meadow for the night.

DAY 07: ALI BUGYAL / DIDANA TREK: 8 KM / 6 hrs, ALT : 2700 m

Today we continue to trek down through thick forests with beautiful view of Garhwal peaks. As we trek down we come across the oak trees and large stands of bamboo up to Didana.

Overnight stay in Alpine tents.

Morning after breakfast drive back to Rishikesh .

OPTIONAL : Rafting trip on the Ganges

Overnight stay in Hotel.

Today we drive back to Delhi.

In case you want to do a rafting trip on the Ganges ( 13 kms) , then we take the evening train back to Delhi.

Trip Notes

Our effort is to give a clear idea about various aspects of the trip to avoid any misunderstanding during the tour. We request you to please read all the information given herewith carefully.

On the Trek


All camping equipment like carry mats, tents, will be provided by Freedom 2 Be. You’ll have to carry your own sleeping bags. In case somebody wants to hire sleeping bags, it can be arranged from NIM.

Besides camping tents there will be a separate kitchen and dining tent with camping stools.

Dry pit toilet tents would be put up at the camping sites. & Porters:

Travel Light ! A Rucksack is what we suggest.  But even duffle bag will do….

But NO fancy trolley suitcases please!

Porters / Mules will carry all personal luggage up to a maximum of 15 kgs. Members will carry only a small Day sack for keeping water, packed lunch, camera, extra layer of clothing etc. while trekking. Please ensure that your sack has sturdy straps.

If the member wishes to hire a porter so that he can walk along with the guest and carry their Day sacks, then an extra porter can be arranged on the spot for which the guest must make the payment directly.


A typical menu on the trek will be as follows,

Breakfast: Bread toast with jam,butter, marmalade, nutela, eggs (though its not permitted on this route, but we’ll try to carry them), porridge, cornflakes, juice.

Lunch: Mostly pack lunch. sandwich / puri-bhaji, Boiled egg / potatos, Fruity, one fruit, chocolate.

Evening tea & biscuits/ pakoras

Dinner: Soup, vegetables (as per season), dal, chapatti, rice, papad / pickle, sweet dish. Chinese and continental will also be served during the trek.


May – June: These are the best months for this trek , after the snow melts . During this period you will get to see glaciers on the ways and at couple of places you’ll have to cross them also.

Sep – Oct: Another good two months after the monsoon to do this trek. You will experience lot of greenery around along with some lovely flowers till the tree line.

July – Aug: These months should be avoided due to the heavy monsoon influence in this area.   


Most people in reasonably good health and who live an active life should not have any problems completing this trek. But good conditioning and prior trekking experience will allow you to enjoy the walks at high altitude without being totally fatigued.  We will be trekking for around 5-6 hours a day (on an average), where you’ll be carrying your small day pack having necessary things.

While on the trek the temperatures expected during the day are as high as 10º to 15º Celsius and average night temperatures expected are 2º to 4º Celsius. Except during bad weather when the temperature can go as low as sub – zero.


This trek is physically challenging & in remote region, where professional medical help may not be available. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are in good health and physically & mentally fit to join the trip.

The tour leaders, though not qualified medically, are all competent to give first-aid if and when required. In case you have an existing medical condition or disability you must inform us before making a booking with us.

There will be basic Government hospitals available at Haridwar, Uttarkashi & Harsil.


Delays are expected on account of roadblock & weather conditions. Our effort will be to continue with the trip as per the schedule & make you as comfortable as possible. But in such situations we may have to compromise on the campsite / hotels & adjust to these situations then & there.



- Please get back all your non‐biodegradable waste like plastic etc.and deposit it in your own Hotel or at a plastic storage centre.

- While you trek, crush water bottles and used wrappers. Collect them in your rucksack or any bag and bring them back to your place of stay or at the plastic collection center.


- Don’t litter the mountains while travelling.

- Don’t leave any eatables along the road side for wild animals.

- Make sure that utensils are not washed in the stream but through collecting water in a bucket or a jerry can.

- Don’t spit in water stream while brushing.

- Don’t wash your clothes in water springs or streams.

- Don’t defecate or urinate near river banks and spring beds.

- Don’t dispose off one time used rain coats, chappals and shoes in the valley or mountain slopes. Collect them and dispose off in plastic collection centers.

This effort of your shall be a big contribution in keeping the meadows and valleys  clean and protected. You can definitely help in conserving the Environment!

The terrain and weather may be a bit harsh for small children. We accept kids over the age of 15 years for this trip. It’s an Educational trip for the kids since it’s an Eco Trip where they learn the delicate relationship between humans and nature.
